How come humans love to gamble? Maybe, you’ll find the answer in the history of gambling, that dates all the way back to 2300 B.C. We’ve come a long way from playing dice to online gambling, and in this article we will list some of the most important evidence of historic gambling there is.
Through out history, man has always enjoyed gambling. It was the one social activity that actually broke the hierarchy of society, as noble men and common people gathered around and played together. There are even evidence of royalty playing together with farmers, who never would have met if not for the love of the game.

Main moments in the history of Gambling
Gambling 2300 B.C
The earliest gambling evidence known to man was found in China. The “hard evidence” that was found was tiles, which seems to have been used for some kind of old school game of chance.
Gambling 500 B.C
Evidence of games played with dices have been found in both Rome and Greece. Historians are uncertain where the dice was first invented, but the first dice ever found was in an Egyptian tomb dated back to 3000 B.C. What we do know is that the greeks and the romans invented a lot of different money games and items like the casino chips.
Gamlbing 800 A.D
This is the first time we stumble upon card games played with a deck of cards. No one is sure of what games were played but we know for a fact that the first card games was played in ancient China around 800 A.D.
Gambling in the 1400s – Baccarat is invented
A game we still enjoy playing in casinos both online and offline is the card game Baccarat, which was invented in the 1400s in Italy. However, the game was not identical to the Baccarat we know of today. It took hundreds of years with many small changes to turn in to modern Baccaat.
Blackjack was invented in the 1600s
Most scholars agree Black Jack is a mutation of the game Ventiune from Spain, which was mentioned in one of the works by spanish author Don Quixote way back in 1601. However, no one can be 100% sure. There are more ancient games that are similair to black jack, such as Trente-Un (means 31) from the 1500s and Quinze (meaning 15) from the hills of southers France.
1638 – The first casinos are bort in Italy
The Italians opened the first casinos in 1638 and they have been gambling ever since. There have been times in history when gambling have been banned, but it have always returned.
1796 – Roulette appears in France
In the end of the 18th century “Little Wheel” or Roulette, as we know it, is invented in France. The Roulette wheel have been spinning ever since and is still one of the most popular casino games over 200 years later. Impressive!
1829 – Welcome poker!
Boom! The most known card game in the world is invented. The game was played in gambling houses in New Orleans which was noted by a British actor.
The slot machine is born in 1891
Just like Bruce Springsteen, the first slot machine was born in the USA. To be exact, in New York and the company behind the product was Messrs Sittman and Pitt. What they did was to use the 52 cards from a card deck, put them on reels to create some kind of reel poker game.
